They need to learn to use anything but fresh water to do this with its ridiculous
Seawater works just fine for nuclear power stations, why are we using freshwater for these things?
So we are going the same way as the US where the data centres are more important than the local people when it comes to water.

why are data centres suddenly so important that they may have higher priority for fresh water than humans?
There are loads of alternatives to useing water for cooling there systems but they chose to use fresh water as it’s the cheapest solution. Maybe there should be a tax added for data centres water use to make it not the cheapest alternative
Most are closed loop in our climate. So seems rather alarmist.
Data centers in England currently account for around 0.04% of the total potable water supply. 51% of data centers are waterless. Several are pulling water from the Thames and putting it back in afterwards presumably the only impact is a slight heating of the river. A data center uses about the same amount of water as a leisure center. In summary, water usage by datacenters is a complete non-issue.
Do this whilst grand standing on net zero BS…. We’ve been and are currently being gaslit, conned and completely rinsed of our money, through shit like this. Politicians facilitating the wealth of the already rich, using our tax money… Politicians and corporate are ruining everything and at this point, I do believe wholeheartedly, it’s some sort of sociopathic mental illness that they’re afflicted with.

Data centres: 0.2%
Agriculture: 2%
Hosepipes: 4%
Leaks: 20%
You cant use your hosepipe but you can make ai slop memes about it.

Fresh water is apparently the cheapest option, so it’s not particularly surprising that’s what they’d opt for.

The trade body representing UK water companies has criticized government plans for AI growth zones, stating usage by data centers has not been factored into the nation’s water forecasts.
Water UK called the plans “fatally flawed” and said that projections “explicitly exclude” data centers.
The trade body added that the government policy “makes not a single mention of water” when it comes to delivering AI growth zones, the AI for science strategy or the AI opportunities action plan.
Can’t they recycle their own water ? My fridge does it with refregerant in a closed system.
Enforce a law that affordable house must be built around them to take the water first and recycle the heat

Maybe this is where the cash will now come from to upgrade the system and fix the leaks.
Maybe the AI firms start buying the utility companies….

What’s the obsession with data centres on here?
Their water usage is a drop in the bucket (excuse the pun). I don’t see endless threads about red meat consumption, or leaks. The data centres here barely use any water at all.
Not to get political, but the more time goes on, the more I see that those who capitalise need regulating and consumers less so. The world is backwards.

Hey if they design them to work with waste water and renewable energy, go for it. Otherwise, these companies can fuck off.
I’m half convinced there is an evil ai mastermind at the route of all of this because why are we literally ruining everything for ai.
If they’re exempted, I won’t feel any need to comply with a hosepipe ban.
Seriously, water companies should be forced to prioritise money needed for service improvements over shareholders returns and management bonuses
If heatwaves continue and water priorities continue to go to data centres it can’t be hard to imagine some of these places will be set alight or otherwise destroyed by hot and irritated people

The whole water cycle of AI data centers needs to be better explained.
I mean… You can’t really “use” water in this way, it just passed through, idk, might do some research on it, I seriously doubt they use anywhere near what all the outrage suggests.
Having also reported on this submission to Parliament by Water UK – and thus read the original source – there’s absolutely no evidence that datacentres could be given priority for water. That’s just editorialising by Techradar.
