Similar, but more around drinking coffee with your existing social circle rather than always meeting new people imo.

My two cents: I’d try to join some interest group / sports club early on to make friends. If one isn’t proactive early on, it may get difficult afterwards to meet new people.

I’d say half of Finns don’t enjoy social gatherings at all. The rest meet only family and friends they’ve had since forever.

Having spent a while in Korea, I think there are surprisingly many similarities between the two cultures. I felt I blended in the social culture of Korea much better than I do in e.g. South European countries. There’s a shared high trust, respect for personal space, loyalty, directness, honesty and politeness. While there’s aversion towards confrontation and useless small talk.

From my experience, Finns are much more homebodies than Koreans though. It can be very difficult finding friends. Especially as a foreigner. Even Finns who speak English well enough, often find themselves intimidated by situations where they have to use English, afraid of making mistakes. Best way to connect with people are school, work hobbies and clubs. Finns kind of need to be forced out of the house sometimes. Having a shared activity helps in making bonds. And another major similarity: alcohol is a major component in networking.

OK, so I’m assuming you made some research into Finland before. You should know that Finns are famously reserved and quiet people. That being said, that absolutely does not mean cold. I’ve found them pretty friendly and warm once you break through their (fairly thick) icy exterior.

If you’re in university, then you’ll make friends naturally. Try not only to talk with foreigners. Of course, language is a barrier, and even though Finns speak good English, you’ll need Finnish to make Finnish friends.

Also, join sports clubs or any other club that needs people to talk to each other (not a swimming club, for example). Finns are also big on board games, so there’s that too.

      Good luck!

Welcome to Helsinki. I have also recently moved here & I found meetup very helpful. As someone mentioned earlier, find a hobby & attend events consistently. You might not meet many finns, but you would meet other people who are also looking for social circles. Also try this i found two good friends from this program – https://ihhelsinki.fi/guidance-and-settling-in/friend-program/
      Good luck 🙂
