Come creatore ceco, devo iniziare dicendo una cosa: Sono sinceramente invidioso.
Mentre in Repubblica Ceca spesso lasciamo marcire le nostre fabbriche storiche, stazioni ferroviarie e birrifici trasformandoli in parcheggi, i polacchi sono riusciti a prendere un birrificio in rovina del XIX secolo a Poznań e trasformarlo in un leggendario centro commerciale che vince premi internazionali. Rispetto enorme per aver salvato quel patrimonio industriale.
D’altra parte, mentre passeggiavo per Stary Browar, ho provato sentimenti contrastanti. Architettonicamente è un capolavoro, ma guardando indietro adesso, a volte hai la sensazione che nel corso degli anni e dei milioni di visitatori, abbia perso un po’ della sua anima originale e sia diventato solo un bellissimo, ma pur sempre… centro commerciale?
Sono molto curioso della tua opinione come gente del posto. Come vedi Stary Browar oggi?

I think you answered yourself. We can have ruins, parking or shopping mall. Shopping mall sound ok compared to other options.
But it’s alive now. If it was left like it was, it would be climatic, but still a corpse 🤔

For me, this is very rare occasion of oligarch money spent right.
I mean you showed less than half of Stary Browar, you skipped the entire park area where most of the events are happening, whole Atrium part.
I was there recently as a part of this guided tour (not some commercial one, guide was an enthusiast of Poznań and its history and is doing it for people to know a thing or two about city) – topic was about history of alcohol industry in Poznań and last stop was Stary Browar – he showed us a lot of things that Kulczyk left from original place – down to bottle caps that are part of walls and tools brewers used when brewery was still operational.
At the end of the day it is indeed shopping mall. But if you compare it to nearly every other shopping mall in the world this one really stands out as something more than another temple of capitalism.
And all those comments about people watching their phones instead of enjoying it – I think you should blame people and addiction to technology rather than Stary Browar for it.
While this movie shows some truths about modern society I think it is at least somewhat unfair to Stary Browar.
Initial purpose was lost. It could be just deconstructed. It was revitalised and given new purpose. It is alive, and functional. Win
Of course it’s lost a large part of its original purpose, and for someone appreciating history, I agree it’s kinda sad, but the silver lining is – it survived, yes the form and purpose shifted, but it’s still there and the same people appreciating history can still admire it
No one is clicking your movie
One of the bigger scandals back in the day but folks have the attention span of a gold fish. For those who do not know:
a) The land it’s built on was sold with a discount. According to zoning plans the plot with the former brewery on it was supposed to serve cultural purposes. What did the Kulczyks do? They declared it an “Business and Art Centre” to save 50% on the original price. A few years later the building was sold off to a foreign asset management company. Lawsuits followed….
b) The park adjacent to the building doesn’t belong to the mall as it’s a public park, yet, Kulczyk built a fence around. Because they could…
Is it the ugliest shopping mall in the world? No. Does it serve other purposes than pure commerce? Mhm…marginally. It’s still a monument to how money and politics openly colluded in the 90s and 2000s. Even the current mayor used to work for the previous owners…

Uhmm? Yes? It’s literally a shopping mall, lol. What do you expect? How could we feel otherwise?
Personally I really like it, while it definitely doesn’t feel like old brewery anymore, it still has a significant bit of soul and history of the city left in it making it much better than many other massive soulless shopping malls.
Shopping centers are the cathedrals of today.
