Hypocrisy, something at which it seems many politicians excel …
The surrogate baby was the smallest of his scandals, yet the one who brought him down. Still some way to go as he’s keeping his seat in the parliament.
The question is “the last straw… for whom?” because he should have been investigated long ago. It’s not by the German public’s choice but his party that he remained in this position. And he is not out of parliament, yet.
Actually a good article. We’re fucked.
What’s written here represents most of our politicians. More or less.
Its astonishing that THIS is what broke his back.
Spahn is the prime example of party elites harming democracy. Spahn had no followers. Neither his own partys base, nor its voters or the general public liked him ever. Yet he consitently got it positions of power through good networking with the party elites. That made his career near indestructible.
The guy hoped to have a chill election period as a health minster, where he could spend all his time networking and do nothing actually health related. Then the pandemic came and exposed that. He was utterly incompetent, overwhelmed and probably corrupt. That didn’t end his career. You vote for parties not ministers. He even survived backing Laschet over Merz and throwing every shit at Merz that he could find. Even Merz couldn’t keep him from obtainining further positions of power.
And now THIS ends him. Its funny because its so utterly avoidable and dumb. Surrogacy is such niche topic, he could just have shut up about it. I mean the guy knew that he was gay. He knew that surrgacy will always be his only realistic option to have a child. If he didn’t go out of his way to be known as an glowing opponent of surgacy, that wouldn’t have been a problem.
There are literally no real consequences for him, he still keeps his mandate and therefore his salary
Germany is becoming Ukraine and Ukraine might become Germany … the trends are worrying. Spahn is just a showpiece for German politicians, who are more and more distanced from everyday reality.
They have an own pension system, a private healthcare system, are deeply interwined with corruption and lobbyism in the industry. This even applies to the reddit heroes like Habeck, who used his political merits to join a Danish investment company for instance.
I can more and more understand that people want a reset for the system, since it seems unable to gradually reform.
The german public wanted him gone for years, this is what finally persuaded his colleagues.
Paywall
Meanwhile, I am a strong supporter of surrogacy. As a friend of many gay people, this is the only chance of many to have a child.
He had to step back because he was gay. The recent downfall of conservative politician Jens Spahn highlights the absolute hypocrisy of the Right.
What is infuriating is that right-wingers had zero qualms with the immense damage he actually did to the country and the poor as Health Minister. His hypocrisy is nothing new: he attended a posh fundraising dinner during lockdown, ignored his own experts to blow billions of pounds of taxpayer money on masks that had to be destroyed, and his ministry even tried to dump uncertified, substandard PPE onto disabled people and the homeless. None of that was a dealbreaker for the Right, but the moment his queer life exposed his political double standards, they immediately threw him under the bus.
It is actually not only Spahn who is at risk of this type of reaction. People are smarter than politicians often think and they are not blind either.
We cannot have politicians, that on one hand blame entire generations for not showing enough will to defend their country, as they might move somewhere else to avoid it, then doing this type of thing themselves just in another context. This type undermines society in a way that is far more devastating than some think. Polarisation is already a general issue and any action like this eliminates any hope to ever re-establish any form of patriotism or unity. Which is essential for any country.
Unfortunately he will be back and the people, the CDU voters mostly, will forget or ignore all his bullshit he did. Look at Amthor, corrupt cunt all the way, now he is back as a minister of state.
I have a hard time beliving he simply “misread the room”. Spahn is way to cunning for that and survived way bigger scandals. For me it looks like the first rat leaving a sinking ship. The current goverment is an absolute dumpsterfire and everybody with two working brain cells can tell it won’t last the full 4 years. Getting sacked over this issue gives Spahn an easy exit so that he won’t be associated with Merz and his buddys anymore. He will comeback as savior of the CDU as soon as the current gov has failed and his party has hit a new all-time low in the pollings. Maybe until then people will have forgotten about his corruption scandals and he will be certainly a usefull figleave for the upcoming coalition between CDU an AFD because of his open homosexuality, so that people can point at him and deny that the AFD is facist.
A quick reminder that our Chancellor, Merz, voted against making marital rape a criminal offence
On that note…i find quite funny that the AFD leader is preeeetty much all they preach against.
Time to wake up on that too?
Sounds like it was more petty internal politics so they fit rid of him.
Hes trash, but the Rest of the Trash herd will be stronger for this.
His hypocrisy (outlawing surrogate motherhood in Germany, then circumventing it by going to some underdeveloped hellhole) is normal behaviour for any “conservative” politicians and really the very least of his scandals. That (censored) literally burned billions of tax payer money without any repercussions to him or his corrupt party whatsoever.
Him getting fired for this is like Al Capone getting imprisoned for filing incorrect taxes.
Honestly this baby is a hero. It did more for the good of Germany that the whole Government in over a year
One rule for me, one rule for thee knows no boundaries for politicians, apparently.
The irony is, if he‘d just passed a law against insider trading and got caught insider trading, nothing would have happened either. In fact, they might have asked for a tip
It’s because he’s in a party of pseudo Christian / morals and old men who at best tolerated his lifestyle. That’s what brought him down… corruption would have been something they could relate to, surrogacy is not.
Ok can a German explain to me why the CDU has a problem with surrogacy?
I hate this person so goddamn much
I dont care about his surrogate Baby.
I Care about the Billions in Taxpayer Money lost to his Corruption.
Kinderhandel = Tropfen
The government had lots of reasons to fire him for the billions of tax money he wasted but noone in his party cared at the slightest because he was a useful tool.
Now they saw that he is not just buying kids in the USA but he’s also openly gay.
That not toleratable, he was only supposed to be a crooked politician who accept their shady deals in the pandemic when everyone in the CDU became a mask dealer over night.
So they punish him openly, he loses some goodwill and gives up a meaningless title. No real punishment but his xenophob and intolerant party is happy. The rich have their own rules.
