As a parent myself and as someone that works in schools in Germany – I can only say, that there are a LOT of uneducated (regarding foods and effect on the body/teeth), unhealthy and unathletic adults who then become parents and guess what -> results are basically the same.
Also many parents don’t want to bring their children to eat or do activities that they don’t want to and aren’t role models themselves.
Doesn’t seem as bad as in Italy but I would wager that that’s only a matter of time.
Edit: spelling.

Italian diet is still top notch.
But like many European country people eat daily what was considered exceptional or holiday meals back in the days.
And of course… sodas.

Just skimmed through, I noticed only a stat (40% overweight) for Campania, does it say anything about the whole country average that I missed? I’d say Campania is quite a particular region when it comes to eating habits, probably the worst one – after a quick check on google it has indeed 43% overweight, while national avg is around 20% overweight (10% obese), with the north having best regions at 10-12%

“The transformation is visible everywhere: from supermarket shelves stocked with ultra-processed foods to pizzerias selling slices piled high with chips, sausages and fried snacks.”
“10 year old Francesca, who weighs 60kg, says she eats bread with Nutella for breakfast, a chocolate-filled sponge cake as a snack, pasta with lentils for lunch and usually chicken for dinner. But she doesn’t eat vegetables,” her mother, Carmen, interjects”
“When we go out for pizza, people don’t just order a Margherita. They put chips, sausages and fried food on top. – Carmen, 19”
Ah so its not because of the ‘Pizza, pasta, potatoes, protein’ but because they actually just eat ultra processed slop, thanks BBC.

Just yesterday I was talking with my Greek girlfriend about how easy it must be to eat healthy if you’re from the Mediterranean. In Finland we’re forced (more or less by parents) or heavily recommended to have like 1/3rd of the plate in greens so salad/veggies. I hated it, because our salads are bland and crap. These lunatics also like to put peach and other fruit into salads like it’s no big deal.. I don’t get it. So you’re basically traumatized since school cafeteria to avoid salads.
But a greek salad with balsamico, feta and fresh tomatoes? Man I can literally become a vegetarian without batting an eye.
Of course your kids will become fatties if you just feed them pasta with parmesan every day.

Pasta, potatoes and protein are NOT to blame for fat kids. Not at all. The only thing to blame is shitty parenting.

I’m sure the fast food and other industrial processed crap, in any form, is the major contributing factor.
French people avoid fast food and processed crap, but they eat plenty of “bad” carbohydrates and all the things we’re supposed to avoid, and they don’t have anything like an obesity problem. Walking around France, it’s very obvious how slim and healthy they are.

I guess one problem is that Italian cuisine by itself is considered healthy by experts: fish & seadfood, olive oil, lots of vegetables, herbs instead of salt.
But due to falsely understood cuisine patriotism that health claim is projected on unhealthy parts like pasta and pizza and additionally, in too high volumes. Pasta should be a small portion, not a meal in itself.

It’s shocking that the less purchasing power you observe in a region, the more obesity is prevalent.

Half of Campania ‘s trad foods are fried, the other half soaked in oil. Food is one of the tastiest in the world. Obviously they have more overweight ppl. They’re used to bring fried stuff in bulk AT THE BEACH.
Same goes for the whole south. It’s not a diet issue. It’s a quantity issue.

Buuhhh, I eat around 400 grams of pasta everyday without a skip. Around 400 grams of veggies. Lots of mayo and olive oil, 6 slices of bread with Nutella and some cookies here and there to finish it off. And guess what. Still lean AF and abs and muscles everywhere. It’s not the pasta making you fat. it’s your calories in calories out. We should all stop overcomplicating everything.
Go fakking weigh yourself. Measure your belly. Weigh everything for 2 weeks what you normally eat and count the calories. Et voila. You now know how much you eat and adjust accordingly to your goals.
It’s not fucking hard. People are stupid.
If you are a fat piece of shit I will judge you and say it right in to your face when your size becomes a problem in public spaces.

Italy has one of the lowest obesity rates in the Western world. Childhood obesity rates are similar to those in the rest of the countries but then when they grow up they tend to lose weight and align with adult standards.
Italian cuisine is healthy, in addition to the foods mentioned above, seafood, vegetables, fruit, legumes etc are also common

It’s not just about education, ultra processed foods are LITERALLY there to get you addicted to the taste and feeling of dopamine that you get from eating them and idk why are people defending these genuinely cancerous foods, if they were blanket banned society would improve.
