Oggi è stata una giornata normale fino a quando una cosa mi ha fatto incazzare, e poi un’altra cosa, quindi ora ho due cose di cui arrabbiarmi, ed ero curioso di sapere cosa fa arrabbiare le altre persone (questo è un elenco non esaustivo, questi sono le cose che mi hanno fatto impazzire in questo momento, cose per cui di solito sono arrabbiato includono: alloggio, stipendi, corruzione) ma tratterò quelle che non sono qui in questo momento. Quindi cose che mi fanno incazzare: 1) Il sistema comunitario – mio Dio, odio questa reliquia coloniale. Sono di etnia russa, ma ho vissuto tutta la mia vita qui, parlo greco, ho trascorso i miei onesti 14 mesi nell’esercito e odio quando ti chiedo di quale comunità fai parte, tecnicamente, legalmente immagino di essere GC, ma detesto spuntare quella casella (oggi ho scelto di spuntare Non specificato). Ci sono così tante persone con cui ho prestato servizio che erano per metà GC, e molte persone nella mia base militare, che erano cipriote di cittadinanza, ma di terza etnia. Indiani, russi, ucraini, armeni, tedeschi, inglesi, pakistani: tutti ciprioti prestarono servizio nell’esercito. Conosco un ragazzo il cui padre è GC, la mamma è TC ed è nato a Londra, quindi che diavolo è? E perché armeni, maroniti e latini ottengono un posto in parlamento senza diritto di voto? Sembra quasi un downgrade. Odio il sistema comunitario. È un sistema stupido e stupido come quello dell’Irlanda del Nord, del Libano, e segrega la popolazione senza motivo. Sono cipriota, mono. 2) L’immeritata reputazione di Cipro come luogo di riciclaggio di denaro. Odio questa terribile situazione delle pubbliche relazioni, dove ogni volta che dico da dove vengo (e dico Cipro, perché fondamentalmente non ho mai vissuto da nessun’altra parte) sono tutte stronzate e sciocchezze, su quanto sia facile riciclare denaro a Cipro e bla bla bla. Il governo deve lanciare una campagna di pubbliche relazioni per ripulire la propria reputazione e denunciare tutti questi giornalisti disonesti. Sono 2 sfoghi per ora, potrei sfogarmi in futuro. Ma la mia domanda a tutti è: cosa fa arrabbiare tutti gli altri?

I never heard of an Armenian or Maronite serving.
The community system is not as important as you make it out. It’s just to determine which school your kid goes to and if you go to the army or not, maybe a few more things.
Also, note that Armenians, Maronites and Latins vote in the parliamentary elections as part of the Greek community and therefore they do have a say in the election of the voting Members of Parliament. It’s only the observer members of their communities that do not have a right to vote in Parliament.
Now, as far as money laundering is concerned, you are way off. Cyprus has laundered billions and billions and money laundering is still going on, look at all the sanctions being slapped on Cypriot companies. Yes, the situation has improved in recent years but it was only after heavy pressure and threats of sanctions from the EU and US. In any case, the reputation is not undeserved.
Agreed with a lot of what you’re saying, but there’s some caveats.
Regarding the first, it’s the same in the UK. They all you to add white/black/Asian/mixed (and different denominations of each one. Where does a Cypriot fit into that? I’m darker than Pakistani’s when I’m tanned.
Unfortunately, it is as you said, a remnant of the colonial past in Cyprus and it has been enshrined in our constitution, so no one bothers to change it.
Regarding your second point… You’re right, a lot of Russian money left the country. Partially it has been replaced by Israeli and Ukrainian money, the disparity is still there and our government is going very little to disprove the reputation we got.
Add to that, the mess that is the legal system in Cyprus, and you’re not left with a lot.
Some of the “legitimate” businesses you’re talking about are also involved in a lot of grey areas of the law, that our legal system is not equipped to handle.
Regarding my pet peeves…
1. The “this is Cyprus” mentality, that in the end prevents any change from happening. Acts as an excuse to not do anything, and a pass on the assholes that have screwed us over.
