Yap, blow up russia’s aerial defenses wherever they are, get more aerial defenses from the west, to deny the sky to russia’s planes. There is a plan here, yes. And it is being implemented.
It will be enlightening to see how this war is viewed in the coming decades. I can hardly imagine how frustrating it must be for Ukrainians to be invaded and not receive the help that they know is available.*
At the same time, neither Ukraine nor The West was ready for this. I’m still not sure Ukraine is ready for F-16s (100 Flankers, or even Fulcrums, would probably be a lot easier, if they were available), but neutering the SAM threat gives them their best chance. Without air superiority, Russian artillery and infrastructure are too vulnerable and they won’t be able to sustain their occupation.
*I don’t think Ukraine “deserves” Western weapons and support. It’s not owed to them. However, by 1) being the victim, 2) being seen as pro-Western and “like us,” and 3) having something to offer, namely a chance to take down the Russian threat at relatively low cost and with reduced threat of nuclear war, Ukraine can argue that The West benefits from supporting them.
