A group of countries, of which the Netherlands is also a part off, is allocating 350 million euros to the purchase of 152mm artillery shells for Ukraine. There is a dire shortage of this type of ammunition, which can be used for the Russian weapon systems that the country still possesses.

Dutch defense Minister Ollongren announced this during a NATO meeting in Brussels. For security reasons, she does not want to say exactly how many grenades are involved and when they will be delivered.

The purchase of the 152mm grenades is paid for by the International Fund for Ukraine, which has been set up by nine countries: in addition to the Netherlands, these include Australia, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden. The Netherlands has so far contributed 125 million euros to the fund.

Ukraine previously received ammunition, but these were mainly 155mm shells that can be used in howitzers donated by the West.

However, Ukraine also has a lot of weaponry that dates back to the Soviet era. The ammunition for this is starting to run out. With the delivery of the 152mm grenades, these weapons can be used more effectively again.

Ukraine also urgently needs more anti-aircraft defenses. The Netherlands recently committed to three launchers and a radar for a Patriot anti-aircraft system. Ollongren is still looking for other countries that can supply the other parts.

According to the minister, haste is required, because Ukraine has to defend itself against Russian attacks every day. “If we work well together as partners, we can make this happen,” says Ollongren.

After the summer, the first of the 24 F-16 fighter planes that the Netherlands donated to the country will also go to Ukraine. Before they can be deployed, Ukrainian pilots must be trained to fly the aircraft. This happens in the United States and Denmark.
