Mi ha sempre interessato il motivo per cui Tbilisi è sempre stata la città più importante del Caucaso e perché era così importante per ogni impero confinante con la Georgia e perché Tbilisi sembrava sempre più ricca delle altre città caucasiche, sai perché?

It isn’t nestled too deep east nor too far west, isn’t unreachable, is on an important river that at that time was transport capable, and historic inertia.
It is literally in the middle of the south caucasus and it was established in a basin on a river that goes through the entire region, in addition to natural springs, overall a very good place to live and trade from. After the establishment of the city it quickly became an economic hub first and foremost, then by inertia it kept it’s importance and in a snow ball effect would often end up as the center of the southern Caucasus. Plus politically it had periods of both being a seat of power in an independent kingdom, as well as being a trader city state so it never fell into any level of irrelevance.
Because we’re awesome.

* Strategic location along major trade routes connecting Europe and Asia
* Favorable geography
* Cultural/religious center
Mostly it’s because of location. It’s located on a narrow strip of relatively less mountainous land between Greater Caucasus Mountains and Lesser Caucasus Mountains. Tbilisi region probably used to be the only easily traversible path between populous Colchis lowland and Kakheti/Azerbaijan lowlands. Naturally, a lot of land trade passed through Tbilisi, especially if you factor in foreign powers like Byzantium/Ottomans/Turkey and Persia/Iran.
Add to that abundant freshwater sources around the city and room for growth and you get a literally perfectly situated settlement if you ignore the fact that it’s not very close to the sea.
I’m sure there are a lot of other reasons tho.
I am getting troll vibes from OP 🙂
Armenia had a number of big important cities in the past as well but they were all destroyed by the 17th century and are now in ruins (e.g. Ani). It was largely a wasteland due to centuries of war when the Russians arrived, who founded Gyumri (Alexandropol), the biggest city in Russian Armenia until WW1. The place of Armenian intelligentsia at that time was… Tbilisi.
Many reasons for it
1. Georgia is the only country in caucasus that borders every nation in the region, making it a priority for empires seeking to be hegemons in the region.
2. Tbilisi is located in eastern Georgia, thus making it a central city in the Caucasus regions, that means garrisoning the city could secure most of the Caucasus if the manpower is significant enough.
3. Being central city in Caucasus meant easier access to other cities thus making trade with them much easier, especially considering the fact that Georgia has access to the sea, so merchantry in Georgia, and Tbilisi specifically being almost always a relevant way for economic growth.
4. The fact that Georgia preserved its independence through most of its history meant that the Capital was almost always a priority to defend and build up for Georgian rulers.
Maybe I’ve left something out but these are four main reasons as to why Tbilisi was always standing out in the region, at least according to me.
