The incident took place at the European Fencing Championships in Basel. Olena Kryvytska won the bout with a score of 15:9.

I know some people, especially russians, will go berserk and decry the refusal to shake hands. Sportsmanship, ostensibly, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. When you start to value humanity, we’ll talk about sportsmanship. If I was russian, I would feel so ashamed of what my country has done and continues to do to Ukraine. Not only would I understand the refusal, I would apologise on behalf of my country. However, I know most russians will not comprehend this sentiment.

To be honest we don’t know her opinions about the war. And she can’t change the fact that she born in Russia. She is attending the tournament from Georgia. I don’t know anything about her. If she said anything shows support to the Russia about the war, I can understand it. But if she is a person who is against the war, this act doesn’t make sense.
And I can’t comprehend the other comments. People talking like she started the war. She got called murderer, got responsible for the killings… Don’t let hatred consume you. Russia and Putin responsible for the war. Not any random person who has some kind of connection to the Russia.
