I love this video because it shows them practicing for the eventual stage performance, without costumes but with plenty of enthusiasm.

**Background on the Song**

This song has actually had multiple lives!  The song “Komaryk” (“The Little Mosquito”) also known as “Oh, what a commotion” is an old Ukrainian whimsical folk song about the Mosquito’s marriage to a Fly… and the not-so-happy ending of that union.  I’ll include a link to a recording + u/Lysychka’s translation of the original song in a comment below this one.

For such a funny little song, it was studied by many Ukrainians scholars who were probably enchanted just like we are with the light yet quite punchy lyrics that say it all – yearning for love and belonging, the tedium of life, and wanting to be remembered.

The writing of this song was first recorded in the 18th century.  Ivan Franko dedicated a lot of his scholarly pursuit to it.  Sadly, it was also noticed by russians who used its melody but changed the lyrics… so this also needs to be filed along with our other posts about the appropriation of Ukrainian culture by the aggressor nation.  I am so tired of having to write posts about Ukraine and having to talk about russia.  Well, anyway…the song was adapted to a new reality in the beginning of the 20th century talking about Mosquitoes signing up to fight the russians and the Nazis.  And now, as you see in the video, it has been adapted once more.

It also seemed like a great time to post this as Komari – an anti-air unit of the 125th – is currently running a fundraiser to help buy thermal optics.  If you didn’t know, Komari means “Mosquitoes” 🙂
