Alina and Andrii Horpynych are a young couple from the front-line town of Hulyaipole. Andrii, a soldier, now has a prosthetic where his arm was amputated. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation, supported by his wife.

Alina on how they started dating: I was still in school when we started talking. I was probably attracted by his sense of humor. We became friends, and I realized he was a trustworthy, kind person,”

Six months before the full-scale invasion, they bought their own small apartment, but the building is now damaged:

“The windows are boarded up, you can’t even enter the kitchen, it’s all covered in glass… I think it’s probably good that we only lived there for six months. We didn’t have time to get attached,” Alina said.

The couple faced the first days of the full-scale war in Hulyaipole, where they witnessed the initial shelling as described by Andrii:

“There were shellings, we sat in the basement. This was when the russians were trying to enter Hulyaipole. We sat in the basement, listening. There was no internet, no connection, mortar fire.”

Andrii had his own farm and kept livestock, but eventually, he joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine:

“There are many reasons why I joined: they destroyed my grandmother’s house in Uspenivka, where I lived all my life, my grandfather died, and I didn’t see him because I was in Zaporizhzhia and couldn’t go there. For the house, for my friends.”

For nine months, Andrii defended the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. During this time, the couple managed to meet a few times, and they got married.

During one of the combat missions, Andrii was injured and saved by his mates and evacuated to Dnipro, where his wife Alina joined him. He was in critical condition, with burns and amputations of his arm and fingers:

“The doctor said, ‘You can kiss him on the chest,’ because his face was burned. I came up and kissed him. I brought a watermelon from Zaporizhzhia, cut it into pieces, and fed him in the ICU. He wanted watermelon and cake,” Alina recalled.

Andrii is now waiting for a bionic prosthesis but can already drive a car by himself:

“At first, I couldn’t see anything; there were fragments in my eyes. But now I can drive. They removed the fragments, stitched me up, got rid of the scars, and replaced the lenses. There’s still work to be done above my right eye. There’s plenty to do.”

The couple continues their treatment. They dream of celebrating their honeymoon, and, in the future, having children.
