For the fifth year, combat medic Liudmyla has been saving the lives of soldiers on the front lines. She worked as a nurse before in the surgical department of a hospital in Vinnytsia for nine years.

“It was much easier in the hospital because the doctors were nearby: you mostly followed their orders. But here, everything falls on your shoulders. You decide on your own what to do first, whether to tamponade, leave the tourniquet on, or administer stronger pain relief,” says the combat medic.

Liudmyla joined the National Guard in 2019 and has been saving soldier lives since then.

“My brother was on the Maidan and was injured there. He has been serving since 2014. I came to his wedding. I met the military people, talked to them, and decided to join them as a medic. I came to his unit where he serves, and we are still serving together,” says Liudmyla.

“I had a situation in Terny — our mate stepped on a mine, losing both legs above the knees. He didn’t scream at all. He endured, gritting his teeth. It took about two hours to evacuate him from the battlefield to the stabilization point. He endured it, was conscious. I would ask: does it hurt? He says: I’m fine, don’t worry. I calm him down, and he calms me down.

When your comrades, with whom you served, and were friends with their families, die before your eyes, it is very difficult. It’s hard when you evacuate a comrade who is 18-19 years old.”

At home, Liudmyla has a daughter, and this is her motivation to stay on the front line.

“It’s better for me to endure this here now so that our children don’t see this. I believe that victory will come. After all, so much blood has been shed — it has to be,” the woman is convinced.
