As long as Ukraines conditions for negotiations (Russia withdraws from the occupied areas) and Russias conditions for negotiations (Ukraine withdraws from the annexed areas) are this incompatible with each other, peace is still very far away.

I think many people underestimate how committed ordinary Russians are to this war. They see Ukraine as a spiritual part of Russia and will not stop attacking until Ukraine is back in the Empire. This is beyond any rationality. It is blind obsession and mental illness on a massive scale.
