I am all for free press, however, reporting to the world what is the equipment available to specific Ukrainian units currently defending the Kharkiv front is borderline criminal.

      Ukrainian media should know better.

While some might get upset that this highlights a lack of equipment for people on the front lines it is also critical that this information be ***responsibly*** released.

TDF battalions have been equipped in a very adhoc way so far this entire war. Some back line units are armed to the teeth while some front line units have whatever crap they can buy, borrow, or steal.

The reporting time for this was entirely responsible and ***needed***.. People need to know this so they can complain to the government and force the government to continue to step up anticorruption activities.

    3. TL; DR This is about the Territorial Defense Force specifically. They are a reserve force of light infantry with highly inconsistent levels of skill, experience, and equipment to begin with. So even in peacetime they are a bit underequipped, let alone having to deal with the exigencies of an ongoing war.

These particular units were recovering from heavy losses along the Donbas front. They had recently been rotated out, presumably as part of the long-awaited troop rotation that is possible due to the influx of new conscripts and more equipment. Maybe there is something fucky going on there but to me it is not much of a surprise that they would be unready to face a heavy assault by Russia.

My question is more why Ukraine didn’t know the assault was coming in time to prepare more of a defense.
