      >>So why is electricity so expensive in belgium??

Because solar and wind are intermittent. This results in an oversupply of electricity when there is a lot of wind and/or sun energy, but makes balancing the grid more difficult.

Imagine you have a gas plant that is idle most of the time but is necessary to deliver high output at a moment’s notice. The fixed costs of that plant are very high. This is expensive energy, but you need it to prevent blackouts.

If you have a digital meter, you can switch to a flexible energy contract and benefit from the negative prices. (not recommended if you have solar panels).
