      Good, if only the EU would swap over to an EU standard gauge as well…

      Once fully converted (not as simple as it sounds), it would also slow down RuZZian logistics when they inevitably try attacking again in the future and can’t transport their fodder nearly as easily.

      Ukranian railways are comparatively slow (but popular) and freight optimised. Car ownership is low, and the build out of motorways has been much less than in France, it’s about 1/6th the size.

      What is needed is some additional high speed passenger routes in European gauge linking major towns and cities. Ukraine has far more free space to construct it, and compact dense cities with high urban density. Probably therefore new fast rail can be brought into the centres via short tunnels.

      Some freight rail could be harmonised to the same guage or both guage in the same tracks, with transfer hubs for transferring freight near the border. Robotised freight handling and palletised transit are in the future, but can be anticipated here and will be attractive solutions very soon.

      I think there will always be both guages in Ukraine due to the size of the existing network.

      But, a more important distinction is around speed. Slower speeds suit freight and low cost passenger transport. Higher speed systems may as well be built from scratch and do in European guage, because slow and fast railways don’t mix. A dedicated freight network with some passenger services sharing the line is possible if they operate at the same speed.

      I would hope for an expansion of freight rail network km and fraction of all freight ton-km being by rail, and a new high speed network (say 150mph) after the war.

      There is potential to expand the extensive pantograph system for trolley buses and trams to include also expansion of passenger services, electrified lorries, and freight trams and hubs.

      This is because Ukraine has the space, has not yet become car and lorry centric, and has wide streets in many if its cities and conditions for expanding the network. Automated handling of freight with high powered robotics can allow for transfer to last km electric road haulage, freight trams or mainline networks, and the planning system should require new industry, factories and major developments to be added to the system. I have many thoughts on this, but the country can aim for the most efficient rail system in the world after the war, and this will accelerate growth.
