I admit I don’t know much about the situation ‘on the ground,’ but I feel it would be a bad look for Ukraine to gain territory after what Russia pulled, even if by genuine referendum. Better the regions become independent, or form their own combined state.
The funny thing is, should Russia actually end this war as a failed state many Russians propably will rather join another country.
If Ukraine does this they are no better than Russia and will probably lose the world’s support.

If you watch many of the videos of the people from those regions, including the ones from Kursk today, the “Russians” in the videos speak with a Ukrainian accent, as these regions had a large Ukrainian population, which was forcibly Russified.
