Well, this is actually quite common in warfare, especially when there is general confusion in the area (like during a sudden breakthrough on the front line).
Only surprising thing is, thet they took out the whole convoy, because it surely took a while and they’d have an opportunity to call out on the radio that they’re being attacked.
