      ***The Telegraph reports:***

Spain’s prime minister has been accused of wanting to [promote Spain](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/spain/) as “a destination for migrants” as he relaxes entry rules for African nationals.

[Pedro Sánchez](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/28/spains-socialist-prime-minister-to-decide-whether-to-resign/) announced on Tuesday an agreement with Mauritania to develop [“humane, safe and organised” routes](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/08/17/migrants-senegal-canary-islands-spain-drown-cape-verde/) in a bid to tackle illegal migration.

Speaking in Nouakchott, Mauritania’s capital, alongside his host, President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, [Mr Sánchez](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/11/16/pedro-sanchez-voted-in-spain-pm-amid-warning-jan-6-riots/) said “the contribution of immigrant workers is fundamental for our economy”.

The [west African migration](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/west-africa/) route to the [Canary Islands](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/07/10/migrants-missing-at-sea-spanish-canary-islands/) has seen a [154 per cent surge](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/10/11/spanish-canary-islands-overwhelmed-migrant-arrivals-covid-forces/) this year.

More than [21,000 people crossed to the islands](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/11/28/tensions-rise-canary-islands-thousands-migrants-seek-new-route/) in the first seven months, according to data from the European Union border agency Frontex.

Spanish authorities believe that opening more legal routes will discourage migrants from taking the [dangerous journey across the Atlantic](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/11/25/four-dead-latest-migrant-boat-capsizes-canary-islands/). To that end, Mr Sanchez also agreed to issue temporary work permits for Mauritanians in Spain, and €500,000 (£421,000) to train Mauritanian security forces in better policing of migration.

It makes no sense to keep promoting immigration while you have the highest unemployment rate of the EU.

The canary islands are receiving About 100 illegal migrants a day, and the only practical limit at the moment is how fast people trafickers can put them in boats.

The president goes to Africa and wants to promote “circular migration” of 250.000 people, most of whom will of course overstay their visas.

Unlike him, i have actually talked to ilegal migrants, who after some months, have ended up abandoned and living on the streets in very vulnerable situations. And I feel ashamed.

It is very easy to be welcoming and generous when you dont actually give a S about the people you are dumping in our towns nor about the residents.
