[“Ilovaisk is not only a tragic event in Ukraine’s history but also a testament to Ukrainian resilience, an act of bravery and heroism by Ukrainian soldiers. Let us remember that despite the losses and the enemy’s deceit, our soldiers did not surrender but continued their breakthrough from the trap and their fight.](https://www.ukrainianworldcongress.org/day-of-remembrance-for-ukrainian-defenders-uwc-honors-fallen-soldiers/#:~:text=August%2029%20marks%20the%20tenth,heroism%20and%20dedication%20to%20Ukraine)

Tragedy implies a grave disaster or misfortune caused by a genuine misunderstanding or a character flaw in the victim(s) despite best intentions. Any incident of friendly-fire is tragic. Even the Russians’ [shootdown of KAL 007 in 1983](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Air_Lines_Flight_007) or the Americans’ [shootdown of IRA 655 in 1988](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655#) can be deemed tragic.

At [Iloviask](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ilovaisk#Ukrainian_forces_retreat_and_massacre), it was not at all the fault of the retreating Ukrainians that the Russians opened fire to mow them down.

Meanwhile for the Russians there, as elsewhere, *the cruelty is (was) the point.* It had nothing to do with tragedy.

There’s *nothing* tragic (let alone honorable) in massacring retreating defenders who’ve been funneled into a corridor like the Mongols did to the Hungarians at the [Battle of Mohi in 1241](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mohi#Afternoon).
