    1. And much like Russia, so many years later, their government founded on the idea of ousting the old and installing a progressive government, has just become another attempt at bringing back the old status quo.

Kemal Ataturk is evidently the perpetrator of the second phase of the Greek Pontic Genocide with 350.000 deaths (International Association of Genocide Scholars’ resolution – 16th of December 2007). Actually, some historians claim that the turkish liberation war “was fought not against aggressors, but against minorities”.

*Vahagn Avedian argues that the Turkish War of Independence was not directed against the Allied Powers, but that its main objective was to get rid of non-Turkish minority groups. The Turkish National Movement, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, maintained the aggressive policies of the CUP against Christians;[19] most former members of the CUP joined the movement,[20][21][22] and were active participants in the war.[23]*

*There was some local Muslim opposition to this actions. But it could not change anything because of authoritarian essence of Kemal’s regime. For example, when it turned out that Greek women and children were going to be deported from Samsun, seventy Turkish notables telegraphed Kemal, saying that it was against their religion to massacre women and children. The dissenters recommended deporting them to Greece instead. Kemal responded by emphasizing atrocities committed by Greeks against Turks and described expulsion of Samsun’s Greeks as a “merciful act”. The authorities then threatened to charge the dissenters with “disloyality”. They backed down and promised not to take further steps to oppose deportations.[85]*

**Also, the greek army didn’t even get close to this area, so there was not a war and foreign armies present. No fighting and war in Pontus, only the Turkish army against their own civilians / minorities.**

Finally, I wish for the Turkish state one day to akwnoledge these, because the recognition and education would have helped to avoid many more atrocities that followed (massacre in the dersim, cyprus etc.) or might follow.

Turkey used to be pretty attractive for foreigners just a few years ago. However, lately they’ve been inconsistent with the rules, changing them every month, increasingly unfriendly towards expats and more expensive for tourists. If it’s crazy hot and more expensive than Canary Islands it just stops making sense.
