Again, Volt ahead of the curve. In the Netherlands, Volt is the only party that actually reaches the goals set out in the Paris Climate Agreement. Because renewables and nuclear energy both in the mix. And besides climate, we didn’t even mention the geopolitical aspect.

It’s a bit late for that now if they want to address problems being faced this decade. Can still be a good investment in future energy security, but we cant let it distract us from renewables and storage.

But sure, if there’s locations and situations where nuclear fits well and works financially it certainly should be built. One thing the EU can do here is push member states who have banned nuclear power to repeal those bans, and instead set up reasonable conditions that nuclear power plants need to meet if an entity wants to build one.

      Worth mentioning

      * Among the [largest EU Uranium suppliers](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1147442/imports-of-uranium-to-eu-by-country/) there are currently also Russia and Kazakhstan (both former USSR)
      * Discovered uranium reserves are expected to last [less than 100 years](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-long-will-global-uranium-deposits-last/) at current consumption rates, much less if the demand increases (warning: first comment mentioning sea uranium gets roasted)

why did the nuclear power plants in Germany and Lithuania close prematurely?

Inb4 thread is hijacked by Germans stating nuclear power is the MOST EXPENSIVE ENERGY IN THE WORLD

Nuklear Energy is not our own energy when the fuel has to be imported.

    7. There is a free giant fusion powerplant in the fucking sky … Plus it gets very expensive to handle the waste, which everyone conviently forgets about, Which raises the cost for society for 1000s of years. For the cost of one NPP one could build a shitton solar panels and basic storage. But lets build NPPs, the NIMBYs will surely not lawyer up from day one – raising the cost even more.

    8. planning , approving and building any new nuclear reactors would take so long that we could switch to fully renewable in the meantime.

    9. Von der Leyen was minister in the Merkell government wasn’t she?
And they closed the German nuclear power plants, becoming more dependant on Russian gas, and on coal.
      Bravo.
This should have xome 10-20 years earlier.

Great. Now pull up how she voted in 2011 in the Bundestag.

As long as we also build the backup (looking at France 2022)…
