The above shows the peak density in a 1x1km grid cell in the European census grid per city. Cities are defined via municipal divisions. Some of them are functionally grown together with larger cities (for instance L’Hospitalet de Llobregat many would probably regard as Barcelona but it is its own city on paper).
It’s absolutely crazy how 4 of the top 5 are in Catalonia and basically Barcelona & it’s surroundings

I always found it funny how you are driving in Spain, there’s literally nothing around you and BAM!, a city of a million people just spawns out of nowhere, and i think that’s the reason density is so high in Spain, it seems suburbs with detached houses barely exist there, basically an entire city has just high density zoning.
That’s why 66% of Spaniards live in appartments, the highest number in Europe, and second in the world only to South Korea. On the other hand it makes for some incredibly convinient lively cities.

London = 5,640/km2

Finally, the full list instead of those 10 most dense per country or something

Look at the top 20 and then cry again about tourist visiting these cities. What’s the point in living in such crowded places.

Why Spain? You would think they have plenty of space to build a bit wider

I would never guess Szczecin will have the highest density in Poland. City centre ok but you go outside if it and there is so much green and distance between buildings.
Maybe it’s mostly the case of not many people owning private homes over here compared to other cities? And instead most people living in block of flats. Curious.

Vienna/Wien can‘t be correct- we hit about 2 mill ppl total, which would be about 4830 ppl/km2- far, far away from the 30000.
Same, when i only count the more dense „Inner District“ only, which has about 5500 p/km2. Also far, far away from >30000
Where is Monaco? Should be the first on that list no?

If properly designed, dense cities are the best.
Better public transport, easier to work, meet family and friends, cheaper to deliver power, water, etc. Everything is just in the same place, so if you want to work, go shopping and then meet some friends, you can do all that without losing much time commuting between places.

I wish I lived in a more densely populated city.
