Most interesting fact- The church Saint Gr. Illuminator was called “villagers church”, “Գեղացիների Եկեղեցի” իրենց բարբառով, among old and local Gyumri’s population. Cause most of local intelligence and old residents were mostly visiting Amenaprkich, 7 wounds and Saint Nshan churches))) And all “immigrants” from other villages nearby were mostly visiting Saint Gr the Illuminatior.

At the end of the 19th century, Gyumri had 30.000 inhabitants while Yerevan had 29.000. Today, Yerevan has over 1.1 million inhabitants while Gyumri has 10% of that.

My favorite building is probably the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God. Unlike the Holy Saviour’s Church, the cathedral mostly survived the earthquake and I find parts of its decoration interesting like the altar.

The Black fortress, aka Sev Berd as favourite building (crazy how it isn’t an even bigger tourist definition).

Most interesting fact (or rather facts) is that Gyumretsis are Western Armenian speakers with a findness of Catholicism.

The tradition of blacksmithing in Gyumri was entered into UNESCO as a cultural heritage of humanity. It’s important because in Armenia blacksmithing almost disappeared in the entire country in the 1900s but in Gyumri it continued. Remember this sentence next time you visit Gyumri and you will notice some interesting things.

Gyumri’s name officially went from Leninakan to Kumayri to Gyumri between 1991-1993.

But locals still seem stuck calling it Leninakan.
