The people supporting smoking bans in beer gardens are thinking of the three weeks of summer, and not considering the fact that a lot of pubs will become more expensive or shut down completely as a result.

Sports grounds means “in a small smoking area outside the stadium”, not in the ground as that’s already banned.
Doesn’t affect someone who doesn’t smoke whatsoever.

Why ban outdoor smoking, isnβt that preferred?

If you compare the “All Britons” data to the “Smokers/non smokers” data
You can really tell just how few people smoke in Britain these days

It’s a shame to see equal proportions of Lib Dem voters being okay with this. This sort of thing is expected from the two main parties but the LDs are supposed to push back against the nanny state. Disappointing.

As a non smoker who visits pubs and often sits outside: I don’t see why smoking in a beer garden is an issue. Either it’s big and spacious enough you might sit there outside to eat or drink anyway, in which case there’s probaby enough space it’s not a problem, or it’s a small and dingy place people only go to smoke anyway.
I wonder what comes out if we would split this by people who visit a pub at least weekly vs at least monthly vs almost never?
For hospitals and sports ground – I’ve got no problem with banning smoking in busier outdoor areas or by entrances/windows, but as long as there is a reasonable covered smoking area.

Remember that polling often shows very weird authoritarianism.
During lockdowns In a YouGov poll 34% of people said Clubs should *never* reopen.

Smoking should be treated like masturbation. You can do it on your own or around others only with explicit consent, otherwise never.
