Reality is this sub has a lot of people that spend too much time online. They’re productive in the wrong ways, and on here complaining about it.
Other reality is this sub has a lot of people that are specifically in the most impacted group by current economic crises. Housing is a crises, we do need a rethink but it’s going to be slow. There is too much wealth tied up in property – and as much as EVERYONE wants that to change (even current homeowners), if it’s done in a sweeping fashion the arse will fall out of everything. Immigration is unsustainably high, but the system is under strain due to two significant conflicts and Brexit fallout but it’s tightening in response. Not immediate knee jerk tightening, but tightening.
As much as government in Ireland isn’t perfect, I’ve grown up in England and seen it utterly nose dive in two decades. You’ve no idea – you only need to visit England now. Drainpipe. And I’ve lived in the US which is currently, genuinely, wrestling with totalitarianism. Trump wins and there are doubts about future elections.
Folks – Ireland is absolutely f**king great. It’s such a turned around place. It will keep improving, keep voting pretty well for yourselves.
Definitely possible to insulate yourself from Ireland’s problems if you own a house, have private health insurance and so on. Voting in your own self interest is nothing new and FG being popular(ish) doesn’t invalidate the hardship some people may be experiencing.

To give an example I am in the age group that has been shafted by house prices. My mortgage is expensive although thankfully I can afford it. I wouldn’t be that happy with the way the country is. Me and all my friends of this age all use Reddit.
A few of my neighbours are say 10/15 years older in their mid to late 40s. All of them have a manageable mortgage and a nice big house in the countryside. They have kids and they are all praising how cheap child care is. It just went down for us from 120 to 70 a week after some change after some government change. It’s great value. The neighbours sometimes mention electricity is expensive but they are maybe somewhat satisfied with the electricity credit. They would complain about normal things like the price of taxis or pints but then they still put up with it and go out every second week or so. I can fairly safely say none of these people are on Reddit.
Reddit is full of posts from the first group who are all replying to each other. The second group doesn’t use Reddit that much. It’s not because they’re greedy scumbag landlords that are FF members.. they’re just not having that bad a time in the country.. things are grand for them. I know this upsets people from the first group.
Annoying.
But maybe not surprising. There have been some big crises at the moment with housing, health and the current asylum/immigration levels. And numerous controversies around the referendums, bike shed, Varadkar, Phil Hogan, Paschal etc.
But unfortunately, I don’t think the other parties have done a good job of properly calling those things out to the extent needed, holding FG to account, and making compelling cases for how their own parties will improve and fix things.
Varadkar leaving has saved fg. He is a snide and unlikeable character. I’m not a fg voter, but I respect Harris a lot more.

Timely reminder that the only poll that counts is at the ballot box.
Nonsense, their party is tearing apart at the seams with TD’s dropping like flies.
This is a case of their friends in the media trying to big up Fine Gael in a run up to the election.
Let’s not forget they were given a 9% point lead over every other party before the last election, and ended up as the party with the 3rd most seats.
People don’t like to think they’re backing a loser, so the media portrays Fine Gael in the highest light possible in a cheap way of trying to win over voters.

This thread is a wankfest of snarky people who think they are far smarter than everyone else.
There are quite a few astonished people in the comments, and to them I’d like to ask a single question.
Apart from the housing crisis (which, I admit, is a fucking huge issue that FG still refuse to take seriously), what big decision have FG shat the bed on?
This isn’t an idle question. The housing crisis is a massive black stain on FG’s record, and they deserve severe criticism for their failure to see it coming and to do anything meaningful about it at any point since. But strip that out, and the attendant consequences that come with it (again, this is a substantial enough list…) and what’s actually left to mount a serious critique of the government on?
Government finances are in rude health. Abortion and gay marriage are legal. We’re at effectively full employment. And Varadkar’s exit (along with the retirement of a number of TDs) has enabled FG to present itself as a newly revitalised party with a new face at its head.
FG are not my party of choice, not by a long shot. But the narrative that the country is fucked and FG are incompetent idiots is way off. This poll result should not be a surprise.
It’s a bold strategy –
1. Create an infrastructural emergency – and rather than address it, claim that it can’t really be fixed and that anyone who claims it can be fixed will bankrupt the country.
2. Create a “migrant crisis” – and use said crisis to damage your largest opposition party who has never actually been in government.
We really do deserve everything we get, how can a country improve with an electorate this gullible?
Its hard to imagine a person who decides to jump to FG at the moment when they are doing such a terrible job on so many fronts. Is it that they just think Harris seems like a nice young man or something?
