Necessity is the mother of invention.
Because of the conditions of the battlefield, Ukraine needs to innovate to be a step ahead of Russia. While Russia has numbers, Ukraine has to rely on strategy, quality and inventiveness.
No shit? I’m glad we had hearings to tell us that. Imagine, a country 100% committed to fighting for its survival is making battlefield innovations faster than the juggernaut military 5000 miles away with no men at risk and a population more concerned with immigrants eating their cats.
I’m currently studying defence industry innovation as part of my masters studies, and certainly Ukraine is implementing these innovations at a faster speed because they have a large and active battleground to implement them. However, I would still say that much of the underlying technology for these innovations comes from US and EU tech-innovation hubs, particularly US at the moment. When we talk about UAVs, autonomous systems etc.
That said Ukranian ingenuity and ability to adapt what equipment they have to changing battlefiled circumstances is actually driving the direction and pace of innovation in the West, as these tech-companies get new ideas for sophisticated technology solutions, and become more aware of modern combat threats, based on what they see the Ukranians doing.
This war has lead to a *massive* increase in defence industry innovation, maybe similar to what we saw prior to WW1.
It’s not just Ukraine, but more worryingly it’s Russia as well, with their pivot towards drones being one of the more visibly effective and dangerous innovations.
Another is advances in electronic warfare (EW), which has crippled those much-vaunted 155mm GPS-guided Excalibur rounds and made them just really expensive regular 155mm. That’s a loss for both Ukraine and the United States.
I’m hoping the Pentagon and the defense industry take at least a few lessons learned from all of this, lessons written in the blood of our Ukrainian brothers and sisters.

Unsurprising. Hand a western, at-peace country a new weapon system, and it’ll first require parliamentary budget approval, committee reviews, testing assesments. Then, teams will start writing operating manuals, tactical manuals, strategic manuals, maintenance manuals. Draft logistic plans, train the first crew for 6 years until they can dream every nut and bolt.
Hand a country like Ukraine, fighting for sheer survival, the same system:
“Okay, so red button does pew pew? Great, we’ll figure out the rest in the field.”
