      With Michelle O’Neil First Minister of Northern Ireland, it seems like the right time to start making the initial moves on this.

      In fact I’m quite surprised Sinn Fein haven’t being pushing a United Ireland more in the Republic. It seems like an easy win to get some momentum back ahead of the General Election.

      Screeching for relevance at this stage. The Emperor’s clothes have been exposed. Sinn Fein neither nationalist nor socialist, though they tried to play both hands simultaneously. Simply a bunch of chancers with no answers.

      I can only imagine how profoundly uninterested this super-conservative Labour leadership is in opening this particular Pandora’s box, or the adjacent Scottish independence question that inevitably comes with it.

      It really is an issue that not a lot of people in the south care about, particularly those over a certain age. But Sinn Féin keep rolling it out as part of their greatest hits, insisting that it’s the number one issue on every voter’s mind.

      There are no upsides of a united Ireland to the vast majority of people I speak to. You get the odd person who wants it but when you ask them to point out the upsides they are very weak.

      Christ there are an awful lot of whingy free staters in this thread. Every poll in the last few years has shown upwards of 60% support for reunification in the republic. A referendum would pass easily.

      There can be no doubt that Ireland is heading down a road towards unity, Brexit has been the biggest driver. However, calling a referendum too soon will upend it.

      I don’t believe it would pass in either community in the north if held today regardless of the promises of both Irish/UK governments

      Good to see they are thinking of the population of northern ireland and not just trying to play a numbers game to try to get back the right-wing light vote that recently took their polling down… “the unionists don’t have the majority any more”… er, ok…

      Her comrades have done zero since the good friday agreement to make a united ireland a place that is attractive to the entirety of northern ireland, a unity vote is no nearer by keeping up this nonsense that unionists are visitors in any united ireland. Everything they say is close to making a huge population in ireland ostracized in their own country.

      Be clear, a 50%+1 border poll is not a united ireland anyone needs – come back to us when you have convinced a huge majority across all communities that it’s for everyones good. Letting northern ireland ceed from Ireland was a terrible decision, let’s not make a reunion an even worse one.

      Bad move imo. I would love it to happen but I just feel like it might be the wrong time
