Il 5 ottobre 1143 fu firmato il Trattato di Zamora, che fondò il Regno del Portogallo. Lo stesso giorno, 767 anni dopo, una rivoluzione sostituì la monarchia con una repubblica.

It was fucking annoying, they knew it was the date of the treaty of zamora, they could have planned the republican revolution for another day and we might have had two different holidays maybe rather than just one holiday for multiple important dates. Because when people ask (americans do) about our independence day, well I guess this is it, but it is also republic day, so 2-in-1 holiday. We do not have an independence day but if we had it, it would be this day.
And usually Portuguese people go to Spain on holiday on the 5th of october and a week later, the spanish are in force in Portugal for one of their holidays. Saturday this year, sunday next year, oh well.
