Some context: a lot of them were war orphans – kids with parents killed during the Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian invasion. Serbia refused to capitulate, and made a fighting retreat all the way to northern Greece, to what is about to become the Thessalonian front.
Given that many civilians died during the retreat and there were no conditions for children to receive basic education, England offered to evacuate orphans and care for them until the end of the war.
