For me, this is bizzare, that a guy with 5% average in polls turned out to be the winner in first turn of presidental elections. Either there were some serious shenanigans going on, or people didn’t bother voting.

God Lord… What can the rest if the EU do? It’s the romanian people who have to decide, not for outside meddling.

    4. Sium4443 on

Apparenlty democracy works only when you agree with the result lol.

Anyways its true that due to mass media any democracy is now a demagogy but there is no way to stop that and in any elections the winner is the one who managed to do a better propaganda.

    5. Guys, no EU will come to save you from yourselves. How would that suppose to happen in the first place? It’s you, and no one else but you, who should move your arses to the voting spots and vote the other candidate. Spread the news, organize, drag your lazy family members and friends. If you think elections are rigged, work in voting comitees as observers (however that works in your country, idk frankly), and protest if they are.

EU will not bring you democracy on neither a silver platter nor bayonets…

[edit] You dont need EU to ban TikTok. Sure, I agree paneuropean TT ban would be better but if you think it’s a matter of immediate national security then bring this up with your own parliament. It would be faster to do it that way anyway.

I get OPs point, I really do, hell, I voted Maia Sandu in Moldova.

But what should we do? It’s not like Bots voted.. he got the majority from the RUMENIANS.. people.. isn’t it how democracy works? It sucks, it really does, but then it’s obvious that democracy doesn’t work.

    8. szymon0296 on

All of you have to vote, even if you don’t support the second candidate. One year ago democracy won in Poland because we were finally mobilized after 8 terrible years of destroying our country and democratic values. You don’t have to go through all this madness, just vote. Every vote matters.

It sucks but what is EU supposed to do?

I am in Slovakia. We live under the regime that is threatening Romania – with Fico. Every single day, it gets worse.

But, Fico won democratic elections. As might Georgescu. Maybe not fairly, maybe with lies, maybe with shady campaigns, but ultimately people showed up and casted their votes.

      It sucks.

But EU should respect democratic principles.

You need to focus on internal problems, not cry for help.

Need to fix your internal shit – and my country the same. The problem is with the people.

All the best to Romania, I hope you can turn this around!

    12. You’re going to make the same mistake in such a short time.

if you come across a post that shows his silly views like the letter describes, just sharing that is enough, since it helps to balance out his messaging pushed by the bot platform. two can play this game for a change.
what happens is that normal people ignore silly things like those, so whatever they amplify goes unchallenged. lots of people are only reached by those messages so they end up forming an opinion based only on the narrative that was designed by their campaign, without any background

    14. I find it completely incomprehensible that both EU and US see election interference at a grand scale yet do NOTHING.

Clearly, our legal system has failed to secure our democracy. And therefore goves no recourse agains distributed attacks like these in terms of disputing results.

We can, however, exact harsh punishment on amyone involved and Russia and China.

Newsflash! ALL of our EU countries are in huge trouble right now.

None of us heeded the warning shots of Brexit, the first Russian invasion of Ukraine waaaaaay back in 2014, or the stupid Pegida / AfD racist parties in Germany.

We need a revival of democracy and human rights across all of Europe, post haste.

    19. Prudent-Job7002 on

France solve a similar problem by itself. That’s what Romania needs to do.

    20. thePope8918 on

Unless elections were stolen”, i would suppose that this is how democracy works. It is the Romanian people who get what they vote for. See for example, the USA.

    21. Mateking on

I am sorry but this is not a European Election. The Romanians need to decide if they want Trump Romanian Edition or not. I have yet to meet a Romanian that would appreciate it if I as a non Romanian told him about his own Politicians. It’s an internal Romanian issue. And while we are one Europe in European elections I feel that this is something the Romanians need to decide. Just like the Germans have their Election in February.

    22. The thing that EU can actually do to “help” is ensure to the best of its possibilities that no foreign or bad faith actors do play a part in electoral interference.

Unfortunately EU is failing on both fronts, they allow foreign interference through social media like Tiktok or X and allowing the billionaire class control all the information flow either by owning conventional social communication and controlling a certain narrative or through the unchecked social media and its mass disinformation campaigns and all the dirty tactics.

That said, candidates that threaten democracy shouldn’t be allowed in a democracy (not to confuse with a dictatorship of the majority).

    23. Elegant_General1418 on

Reddit and its over exaggeration of things. One bad event and you guys are already on the brink of meltdown. Fucking chill.

First of all its a [two-round system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-round_system) vote which means that this week everyone will vote for the lesser evil.

Second the president in Romania has limited power and its mostly a ceremonial figure/defense.

Third even if he is elected in the end of the day he was voted democratically. You can’t just take away democracy the moment something is not going your way.

    24. PutNo3922 on

There is no way Romania deviates from its western allied, NATO and EU path. We will explain to those that voted for him that they have been lied to and his platform is entirely based on Russian propaganda. To those outside Romania, you might not understand how viciously pro western Romania is. People died in 1989 so we can take this path. Yes, we have temporary issues and embarrassments but are working hard to improve. We will never allow someone with pro Russian, pro Fascist, anti Democracy views win the election. Some may think that describing this guy as fascist is just yet another leftist slogan, but he genuinely sympathizes with Romania’s fascist dictator, Marshall Antonescu. We can’t permit that kind of ideology to take root in Romania once again.

In a way the happening is good, because it reminds us of our firm commitment to freedom and democracy, both of which are deeply rooted in our latin origin. By our very nature our path is that of a close relationship with the west, and we will re-assert that in the second round of elections. Post elections we will be even more aggressive in progressing our values.

    25. :)) The guy might be a bit looney, I didn’t vote for him, but this is democracy. It’s crazy how some people from my country are fighting for democracy while being scared and angered by it :)). It beats me.

    26. jakobkiefer on

what can the world possibly do for them? he was democratically chosen, as were many totalitarian figures before him. in today’s digital world, where leaders are made on tiktok and similar platforms, our options are limited and doomed.

    27. ebrenjaro on

“Our democracy need help from the rest of the EU!” I suppose you don’t expect help in democratic issues from us (Hungary) first of all. We have been totally totaly fuck for 15 years.

And I’m sorry but I have another bad news. Don’t expect that the vast majority of the Hungarians in Transylvania will vote against Georgescu despite he openly hates the Hungarians. Those Hungarians who are active politically in Transylvania watch the Hungarian state TV channels and visit pro-Orbán news sites that spread Russian propaganda lies. 95% of them votes for Fidesz (Orbán’s party) in Hungarian elections.(who has Hungarian citizenship as well can vote both countries) Many of them are totally brainwashed with Russian propaganda.

I really root for you and Lasconi to win but it will be harder than it seems. If Georgescu wins that would be catastrophic, even worse times would come to Romania than in Hungary with Orbán’s mafia.

    28. Kurraa870 on

And wtf do you expect EU to do? Vote for us?

It’s not the job of EU to intervene in the elections as Russia shouldn’t also intervene. It up to us to clean the shit that we ourselves made. EU it’s not like Russia, Chiana, Iran and other totalitariam states that simply want to expand, if you want to be un the EU you have to deserve it, no one will force you to do anything and it is not EU’s job to intervene in this kind of things

    33. Necessary_Chemical on

Yes, we all agree that the guy is delusional and he’s smoking some cracking weed. But joking aside, we are in a critical point in Romania where we are dangerously close to have our country confiscated (and yes i use this term because I’m pretty sure that most of Georgescu’s voters have literally no idea why they voted him) by a Russian backed figure that could drag our country back to the dark ages and negate all of the progress that has been done since 35 years ago when we had our revolution against the communist regime.

    34. Sebastianx21 on

Ah yes, pro-russian that loves Hitler, yes, the russians are known for loving Hitler, best friends. They used to do tank meets with the T-34 parked side by side with the Tigers and Panthers at the local mall parking lot.

Romania’s been a communistic shithole since the revolution anyway, corrupt fucks in power ever since, the president has no power, the political parties like PSD are the ones that fucked us over, not saying they’re the only corrupt ones, ALL ARE, but I just meant they’re corrupt in general regardless if Ceausescu died or not, if anything Ceausescu at least did great things for the country while alive.
