**Rule 27** of the [Gaelic Athletic Association](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaelic_Athletic_Association) (GAA), also known as “the Ban”, was a rule in force from 1905 to 1971 that banned members of the GAA from playing or watching other sports such as rugby, soccer or hockey.
How stringently was this enforced? Well, in 1938 President Douglas Hyde – a founder of the Gaelic League and staunch supporter of the GAA – attended a Soccer International in Dalymount with the Taoiseach. The GAA removed his patronage and banned him for life from the GAA!
Since its repeal, they have done everything they unofficially can to stifle the grassroots development of Soccer, Rugby and other international field sports. Of course they’re also happy to sell their fucking television rights to Sky and put on 5 nights of American or British music acts every year.
I’m not just talking about taking in every penny of available grant money for their infrastructure, and then denying use of the pitches to any other sports; I’m talking about more insidious things like scheduling mandatory trainings on top of the soccer or rugby schedule, having coaches cut players who attempted to do both, or simply having a local parishioner burn out a car on the competing pitch.
It’s only by pure luck and religious agitation that we actually have a Rugby scene and a game we can play internationally.

€2.87 billion and the players get the privilege of a free Hyundai Elantra on lease for a year once they post it on Instagram, what a scam honestly, blinded by the pride of the parish into being ripped off.
I am while a member of a rural GAA club with my children involved I’m not the biggest GAA fan, I actually think that the social contribution of the GAA to Irish society is priceless. It is the single biggest social cohesion stakeholder in the nation.

Gaelic football in particular receives a disproportionate amount of funding compared to the rest of our cultural functions like music, art, poetry, dancing or even handball.
GAA is great and any investment in a social functions that benefit the community always bring in returns which is exactly why other areas need the investment too. Limiting loads of areas of the country to “GAA/Soccer” or “GAA/Rugby” is just sad.

Promoting the Irish language as much as possible should be added alongside it.
