I can’t read the article as it’s paywalled. Anybody have a link?
I dunno, we need to invest in and modernise our defence forces, including their physical infrastructure, so I’m not totally against it.
However do I have confidence in our current leadership (both in government and in uniform) to lead a project of this scale and deliver on budget?
No, I do not!
1. The initial budget was €175M (2018). That being said, it was about time they got a new HQ. The old HQ is extremely outdated and honestly a security risk at this point.
2. This is not a normal building. It’s a highly secured building that will not just house all general and administrative staff but also the commando centers in charge of leading our operations around the world, our Military Intelligence Service and our Cybercommando.
3. The reason the budget has increased so much is because of material cost, higher security norms (vs 2018), a new committent to making the HQ completely energy neutral and the new Cybercommando (**that did not exist in 2018**) also requires a lot of expensive “tools” and large datacenter. If you cut out this new Cybercommando, the cost would be significantly cheaper but that would obviously be a bad move.
4. The old HQ was spread through multiple smaller buildings, hindering efficiency. They are now centralizing it all, which brings some challenges. It also includes sports facilities, a daycare and a conference center (which is a great move when you’re across the street of NATO HQ).
5. I’m just happy they are not wasting the old NATO HQ and actually turning it into something useful. The fact that the new NATO HQ and the new Belgian HQ can now be protected as one zone is an added benefit. Also, the diplomatic advantage of being able to get every top general, head of government and NATO ambassador into the new HQ by crossing the street would be too silly not to capitalise on.
