Russia and Assad fought 5 years to take back Aleppo from rebels, and they just lost it in 2 days
this is a city of 2 million people or roughly 10% of Syria’s population
this is the most embarrassing defeat I’ve seen for a conventional army in my lifetime
technically ,it wasn’t even much of a fight, the Syrian government forces just folded and left behind a large number of tanks ,armored vehicles ,artillery pieces etc. to the rebel forces. Russian equipment got left behind as well, including a fucking T-90
before everyone dismisses the Syrian offensive as ” Al Qaeda Islamists” people have to realize that
* the Islamist faction, HTS, is one of the factions involved in the current operation, the other factions like the secular SNA are attacking from the North
* HTS might be considered Islamist ,but to what extent they actually enforce their morality laws is questionable
so they have gender segregation in schools ,but women can go to university and serve in public positions, administration etc. Still Islamist as fuck, but compared to getting killed in chemical gas attacks by Assad its 1000 times better
also, before people claim that the new win will lead to a new refugee wave towards Europe, this is just pure horseshit ,as there are already taking in Syrian refugees that would have otherwise have gone to Europe
its always amazing when you think how interconnected everything is
last time Assad was on the verge of losing Syria, Russian warplanes and Iranian militias intervened to help
this time ,Russian airforce got thinned out by the Ukraine war, while Iran’s Hezbollah and other militias got decimated by Israel
and because of the lack of overwhelming Russian air superiority and Iranian militias **,Syrian rebels were able to blitzkrieg land containing 15% of Syria’s population in 4 days**
this in turn will help Ukraine, because Houthi and Wagner mercenaries destined for Ukraine will have to be sent to Syria, and Russian Airforce might be forced to thin out its presence in Ukraine to help Assad from losing control
the HTS is not my cup of tea, they are still Islamists, but they have been willing to change in recent years and are now busy building a network of schools, hospitals ,community centers in NW Syria.
They do this to win local support ,but they also help reduce the refugee flows towards Turkey and Europe
if the map freezes as it is right now, its still a win for Europe ,Turkey and Syrians, as many can continue to return to HTS/FSA controlled areas, like they do since 2019

Syria showing that the whole Russian, Iran, and so forth alliance is falling apart.
All the main and minor groups involved are getting their asses kicked.
I guess we will see how far the rebel groups go with Syria. Once Turkey starts pushing its influence more and more is going to happen and most likely will turn into a multi front conflict not just Aleppo.

It seems like there’s a lot of people jumping onto this as a huge victory because they can tie it to their general narrative about Russia being incompetent. I would be very surprised if this amounts to anything
