      >The proposal which originated from the Commission was jointly presented by the European People’s Party (EPP), the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), Renew Europe, and the Greens/EFA. But despite joint backing from four powerful political groups, the proposal was rejected following the approval of amendments tabled by the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).

      >These amendments were backed by a majority of the EPP, which diverged from its initial coalition partners, sparking criticism from other political groups.

      >After the vote, Alessandra Moretti, S&D’s negotiator on the resolution, criticised EPP’s supporting the ECR amendments and the “anti-scientific position of the right-wing groups”, stating that these “prevented the Parliament from approving a resolution that could have safeguarded public health from smoke and aerosols, particularly protecting vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women.”

A conservative right wing EU won’t protect us against the tobacco industry 😐

This isn’t a decision for the EU and should be decided by each individual country.

    3. I don’t see why you shouldn’t be allowed to smoke outside on a balcony (or similar) of a Restaurant.

      Is it dangerous? Yes.
      Should you ban it? No.

As for alcohol, you have to put restriction on its consumption, then anyone can decide how to fuck their lives up.

The only ban, like in _*almost*_ any EU state, should be in closed space like bar and restaurant, hospital and schools.

On the note on banning stuffs…the EU should move to legalize cannabis and supporting the use of hemp, or at least to introduce laws that goes on that direction.

That’s unrealistic, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances.

Banning tobacco, even if I agree in principle, is almost impossible. What we will be doing is creating a secondary market in which there will be no control over consumption.

Drugs in general or The Prohibition era come to mind. In my opinion, what we should be doing (as kinda are) is to tax tobacco in an absolutely extraordinary way to discourage new smokers and compensate for the bad effects of smokers on society.

I really enjoy sitting next to smokers (normal and E cigarettes) in Ice cream parlors, outside places in restaurants, waiting next to smokers at bus stops with my kid.

I mean, in this day and age, why would anyone still be smoking? Seriously.

I never thought I’d agree with the ECR on anything. But the equivalency between cigarettes, vapes, and blunts is just not there. Under the new recommendation, not only would a rather powerful harm reduction product be made equivalent to the harmful product, it’d also upend very recent changes in laws in Germany and elsewhere, where smoking weed (“Bubatz”) is now legal in certain areas.

If a law implemented a ban on tobacco smoking in public while leaving vaping largely untouched (it’s already forbidden in most public areas today in most countries), it’d set a powerful harm reduction impetus that can then be moderated by reducing overall allowed nicotine strengths gradually. In ~15 years we’d be probably where the EU wants uns by recommendation tomorrow, but won’t get us.

    10. There’s too much money to be made in tobacco products, governments like money too much to think about public health

The smoking here is easily my least favourite part about Europe. I just don’t understand how it is still so popular. Since moving to Spain, I feel like I’ve gone back 30 years to the UK. At least they’ve embraced vaping there and have some understanding of health.

Progibition is no answer. It only makes crime more prevelant since there is one more substance to be criminal for.

[No clear link between passive smoking and lung cancer](https://academic.oup.com/jnci/article-abstract/105/24/1844/2517805)

[No impact of passive smoke on the somatic profile of lung cancers in never-smokers](https://publications.ersnet.org/content/erj/45/5/1415)

These high-quality studies came out a decade ago, but everyone ignored it and now they’re pushing for *outdoor* bans on smoking… and vaping apparently? And that’s while it’s still perfectly legal to pollute the air with ICE vehicles and coal plants. We truly live in a post-science world.

Typical bureaucrats constantly trying to shove nanny state rules down everyone’s throats – it’s no wonder Europe is heading to the right.
