      Abysmal election for the far right and Daly and Wallace both did horrendously. Fantastic.

      Obviously I’d have preferred for FF/FG to do worse but decent result for Labour and the SocDems.

      The best thing the Soc Dems can do now is avoid going into government, if the offer is put out.

      Labour will jump at it and be punished in the next election, and Soc Dems will soak up the Labour votes.

      I can see them being a big contender in the next election, if it plays out like that.

      I’d imagine that the two largest parties by first preference, FF & FG, will probably do a deal with some independents to form a government. Niche parties like PBP, Labour, and Social Democrats, will most likely have minimal influence in the next government.

      I feared the worst and thought that the four dickhead parties (National, Ireland First, Irish People, Irish Freedom) could be in for big gains. Their overall first-preference votes are still half of PBP, but just flicking through random results you can see big transfers between them and Sinn Fein, which makes me wonder about the disconnect between SF’s traditional base and their leadership.

      The far-right are useful idiots designed to drag Irish politics as a whole to the right. In other countries they’ve become electable, Ireland seems a way from that but they have an influence that seemingly outweighs their polling day impact, because there’s an awful lot of people who aren’t voting at all. The figureheads and terminally online vloggers and dog-kickers will still get their pay cheques, but the winner here is the people who have paid them a pittance to scare the major parties into adopting more right-wing to talking points, as a response to their own crap policies.

      It’s funny, a lot of the commentary here is how awful FF & FG are, and how SF are our only hopes.

      And yet, SF have 100K fewer first preference votes than last time round, while FF and FG are as popular as ever.

      I honestly think that SF are one of the worst opposition parties this country has ever had and that FG should go into opposition and be an honest alternative.

      I think the shinners should be part of the next government as the junior party, like what should have happened in 2020, and let them get their hands dirty and be forced to make and defend controversial policies.

      Concerning that combined the far right leaning parties have achieved a 35k+ votes as new parties.

      Given their infancy they’re obviously operating amateur setups and have anyone they can get as candidates standing for them but caution is seriously needed.

      If the far right movement here was able to attract a handful of competent individuals, who could properly organise and merge the parties, we could very well see a rise of party similar to AfD in Germany.
