If you can’t afford a house, you can’t have a kid
If you can’t afford child care, you can’t have a kid
If you’re barely scraping by, you can’t have a kid
If you hold off till you find the correct partner, married, and move in together, that pushes the number up massively
I’m not surprised at all. Also, women are focusing on careers that don’t come to fruition until around 40.
There societal and economic reasons.
It’s sad because the number of women who reach this age and decide to have children only to realise it isn’t a natural possibility. More provisions need to be given to IVF and the likes if society is making this the normal age to begin having children.
Teenage pregnancies also fallen by about 80% in same period.
The hosuing crisis is definitely playing it’s role in driving up maternal age
My dad got a decent job with an inter-cert, and my mam got a very good job with a leaving certificate.
Now, you need an extra 4 or 5 years of education to get an entry-level position. When I left college at 23 and started writing my CV, my Dad would have had 7 years of work experience, numerous pay rises, and was saving for a house.
I was 32 before I could buy a house and I counted myself lucky to be in that position. I wouldn’t dream of starting a family and not have secure accommodation.
Geriatric births they call them
Woah, we’re way out in front. What makes this even more interesting is that the median Irish woman is 6-9 years younger than women in Spain, Greece, Italy or Portugal
A woman in my late 30’s. All my friends delayed having kids until they were mid 30s not because of careers but because that’s how long it often takes to get a stable home (if you’re lucky) and be in a position where you feel you can afford to.
People don’t want to bring kids into unstable environments.
Doesn’t this greatly increase the likelihood of birth defects etc?
I had my first kids at 33 (twins) financially I could only afford 1. Now husband and I are in finally in a better place financially we are talking about a 3rd but probably won’t happen until our 40s.
The delay in having our first kid was mainly because of two reasons my illness and because of the delayed opportunities for better employment due to having graduated from college into a recession. On top of that the older generation being large whilst holding onto higher positions stagnated the ability to climb, coupled with them not being able to retire early because of said recession.
In my opinion at least the 00s screwed over a lot of generations and it had a knock on effect down them. It made younger generation feel like they had a prolonged childhood. It only now those in their 40s to even late 40s are finding stability in order to have a family where as generations before probably found that in their mid 20s to mid 30s.
Ngl the risk of developmental disorders increases dramatically through your 30s.
Expecting plenty rage for this, but at what stage does later parenthood become wreckless?
A couple shouldn’t be forced to wait that long to start a family over financial matters. But that’s probably what is driving this.

People will start having less and less kids due to economics of not being able to afford a house until a later age, running against a biological clock reasons, all that stuff…
Decline in population.
Top heavy population with pensioners all in nursing homes packed in like sardines.

it’s almost as if the housing crisis, cost of living crisis and total lack of childcare are having some sort of impact
this is why i said fuck it at 28 and just started having kids. not a great plan but it worked out for me thankfully. probaby would’nt recommend but i also wouldnt recommend waiting either.
