      No-one cares about the environment anymore, haven’t you heard? Look what happened the Greens in the last two elections. People are more concerned with what’s in their pocket this month.

      But we will all pay, one way or another.

      Funny how targets for environmental emissions reduction are not met when all that government did was add more tax. It’s almost like taxing people over and over and pretending it will help environment doesn’t actually work.

      Take carbon tax for example. It was tacked on price of fuels and we got much more expensive petrol, diesel and kerosene. But what are people who don’t live in Dublin, Cork, or other major cities to do? Cycle to work 40-50km one way every day, in Irish weather? There is no real improvement to public transport outside of Dublin, and even if there are plans, they are implemented in the most costly and time consuming way they can think off. (Dublin metro, Navan to Dublin rail and Cork Luas says hi)

      So it’s a tax that has captive payer base who can’t do anything but pay. It’s either that or they can’t get to work, buy groceries, or heat their homes. Essentially, pay or die. Which reeks of extortion and not a tax.

      And for anyone saying that carbon tax money is going towards climate action, 40% of money collected is unaccounted for. Meaning it went somewhere but the government doesn’t bother telling where exactly, if they know themselves. Waste of public finances is tradition here after all.

      Environment has to be protected, but it won’t be done until we have someone in power who actually cares about implementing it in a way that works, instead of just taxing people and thinking that’s all they need to do.

      Many countries would soon just say f off. And not pay this bullshit extortionate number. Seems like massively disproportionate compared to what irelands effect/carbon footprint would be

      I know what will reduce or emissions, taxing everyone’s fuel that they need to power their homes and cars. Why….because fuck em that’s why!!!!

      Imagine what a 20 billion fund could have done for emission reductions.

      Signing up to these climate deals was stupid then and its stupid now. They could have made the same commitments and progress without the inevitable fines.

      Going back to 1990 levels of emissions was never going to work considering the massive economic and population growth Ireland has experienced since then.

      The whole thing is a scam, in the 70s they told us we were “running out of oil”, then in the 80s and 90s they told us “the ozone is disappearing” from women using hairspray in their big hair, then more recently it was “global warming ” and seen as places like Ireland remain cold no matter the lie that has evolved to “climate change”, with all these false globalist control scams the only thing has happened is we’ve all ended up paying more taxes

      I can’t believe people in the comments are taking it seriously that we’ll be paying €20bn or even €8bn. No government can possibly spend 8-25% of our budget on a fine and that’s even before you get to the mechanics of who are we paying this to, who is going to force us to pay it etc.

      Then there’s also the consideration that even aside from the amount of money while Americans are driving F-150s around the place no body is going to accept having severe austerity to meet a net zero commitment.

      The big lifestyle changes climate change brings will either happen now by choice or in the future by circumstance. People don’t want to reduce their consumption in a world that has conditioned us to be mass consumers.

      Yes, but the thing is we don’t really have to pay it.

      The quotas are self imposed targets to show the world how seriously we’re taking it.

      We wont be pulling money from the Healthcare or Education budget to cover this, and even if we did it would be going to the EU and would be funneled back into Ireland through some other European initiative. Instead of funding coming from source A it’ll be coming from source B. The net result is identical but everybody can stand around patting each other on the back for saving the planet.

      Its a load of bollocks basically. No serious person actually believes Ireland is going to pay €20 billion for missing carbon emission targets.

      Install more speed ramps every 10m on local roads – then I can brake and accelerate even more than I have to do now and dump more petrol fumes and co2 into the air.

      Well it seems to be what they are doing around me for years anyway. Counted over 30 ramps between my house and parents house.

      Yup, but everyone was against the carbon tax. Even though they’ll likely end up paying more in fines. People are pretty short sighted.

      Won’t happen. No country is going to “give” billions of its taxpayers money away. That money is going to be used to buy votes as always. France has massive debts, think they are going to hand over much more than 20bn ? They’re going to re write it…2040, then 2050
