Good. Mercosur phytosanitary and veterinary practices are no near aligned with EU ones. I do not want hormones in my meat.

If I had to bet I’d say mercosur will get signed bypassing france, vdl knows this is probably the last chance they have or mercosur will ditch us and align their trade agreements with brics and China.
I have yet to see any country aside from Poland being convinced by france to veto the deal.

Perfect timing to sign it. Macron has not the force to oppose this, and he is currently occupied, so it is not his fault.
This is a beacon of light! It must get inked. Why at all, and why it is actually beneficial for farmers as well?
Geopolitics: As we have seen, South America only follows trade, not really principle. If Mercosur would have been implemented further, we would have more aligned with democracy and the West. Their support for Ukraine would have been much more. Latin America is also following into Chinas hands. They are already feeling the pressure of China taking over every unstable democracy there. if this were to succeed we have 700m people that would support China on the global stage. They are all seeking a way to diversify as they are becoming scared of China, this is why we can do a favorable deal for us.
Industry: China and USA are becoming isolationist and those markets will decline. Every industry, including our farmers will need new markets to sell their goods. Europe cannot make up for a loss of those markets. The only real threat from South America is beef and chickens. Both can be offset by our already massive farming subsidies. Beef is in the end the only real threat because they are able to produce higher quality beef than we do. Automakers, Chemicals, Machine Parts, Electronics and much other industry desperately needs those markets. And there we have to be rational. Those industries employ much more people than farmers. Would it be fair to save already massively subsidized farmers at the cost of many other people losing their jobs? Additionally, South America is feeling the deglobalization in full effect. Massive poverty, many farmers are dying out there. Our farmers have a real advantage over South American farmers as well

I mean from a South American perspective, this has to be extremely frustrating. 20 Years of negotiating, so close to a deal, and now this…

Poland is against too… I mean, it’s going to pretty much ruin the farming industry in Europe.

It blows my mind that Germany is still supporting this. I mean, first they get dependent on Russian gas, then on exports to China, and we all know how well that went. Now Europe should get dependent on South America by destroying Europe’s food market? Are they such a reliable partner we can risk this?
If we want cheaper food, we have an agricultural powerhouse right next door – Ukraine… and we still refuse to provide them enough weapons.

There are still quotas for import of meat or dairy products for example. It’s not like there would be total removal of trade restrictions in food products. There are south american food of course even currently in europe.
It is a clear winning proposition for France and EU. It would open huge export markets, almost 300 million people in a growing market. At the same time, it would allow south american nations to diversify from Chinese and US markets, being also beneficial geopolitically for EU and Mercosur.
French make it sound like France would be a agrarian economy. It’s not. France is an industrial country. Only 2,8% of French workers are on agriculture. So in France’s opinion the benefit of 2,8% of workers is more important than the benefit of 97,2%? Sounds hard to understand. Or is agricultural lobby so influential?
And its not like European farming industry would collapse. It wouldn’t. It is still extremely protected market even after this, and this would only partially open it for Mercosur countries. There would still be quotas.
French are shooting in their own and europe’s foot very hard if they block this. Both economic and geopolitical sense.

If it is derailed regardless of acceptance from other countries this will be an enormous political blow to the EU. How can you trust the Brussels government for your country to be more than a peripheral pawn if France can just say no and that’s it. Would make Hungary’s political decisions very logical. If EU is just a system for bigger countries to run the show why wouldn’t you sell your influence to the highest bidder.

If the EU brass wants this trade deal so much, let the European farmers have the same leeway as those in America.
