It will cost a lot of jobs, it’ll involve shipping meat half way across the planet, the consumer won’t benefit, but corporations will

There’s lots to criticise about this deal, but one angle where there are positives is in wider geopolitics.

The EU is starting decline and increasingly caught between US and China(+Russia). Other regions like Africa and the Middle East are wary of Europe so building new trade alliances and supply routes is critical for us.

Brazilian beef is very poor on traceability and also for hormone use. It also contributes to deforestation in the Amazon. Farmers are worried it will be used to bring down the price of Irish beef.

Beef traceability is extremely important. As are standards in beef production. Remember BSE? How do we know that beef entering the Irish market from South America has been produced free of animal based feeds.

There’s health and safety issues here along with economic ones.

Trade deals are good, especially in an environment where US is so unpredictable. There will always be winners and losers and you’ll hear way more from those that may lose out.

France has to oppose this publicly for its domestic audience but the fact that the EC has signed the deal means the French have already given it a green light behind the scenes

The EU does not gaf about the environment if it is economically beneficial to Germany, France, Italy…
