Calin Georgescu tells Sky News he believes his bid to become Romanian president was blocked by EU and NATO leaders who fear peace in Ukraine – but says he’ll keep fighting for victory.

The favourite to win Romania’s controversial presidential election has launched an extraordinary series of attacks in an exclusive interview with Sky News, less than a day after the election was cancelled.

Calin Georgescu, the populist politician who rose from obscurity to the brink of victory, said he had been the victim of a “coup d’etat” that had exposed “the corrupted regime” of his nation.

He said the court that had cancelled the election, pointing to the impact of an alleged Russian interference campaign, was “a dictatorship” designed to protect “the oligarch system that wants to protect what it has stolen”.

Mr Georgescu said: “The constitutional court of Romania… is a Mafia court of Romania.”

“Because nine people decide for 19 million people, this is not acceptable.”

“This does mean coup d’etat. Made by the state which is still in power in Romania.”

He claimed the court had been pressured into annulling the election by a group of European Union and NATO countries intent on subverting democracy in his country, because of their desire to maintain the war in Ukraine.

“They need the war and they want to protect their cheques,” he said to me. “NATO went from defensive to offensive and this we cannot accept. Don’t push me to go to war because it’s not in my interests. But they need war.”

I was worried for a second that he left the country and they took the interview elsewhere, but thankfully, it was done in Bucharest.

I hope he doesn’t flee the country so they can take him to prison when the time comes.

We should stop having anonymous elections until we strip people who vote in these characters of their voting rights.

He is calling on his supporters to show up at the polls tomorrow, even though the election has been cancelled

Anybody with an internet connection can make TikTok videos for a candidate. This is a blatant coup d’etat by the regime. Flip-flopping between certifying the results to annulling them, based on nothing more than political pressures.

0 proof of him having russian ties meanwhile Lasconi’s daughter leaked her russian visa and her talking russian with Lasconi.

Eventhough I firmly believe that this guy was deplorable. Anulling the results in defence of democracy was not the way. He would have 100% lost the second round annyway, so this just gives him credibility.

Well, this is either a disaster averted, or the calm before the storm. TikTok seems to be capable of turning people in to The Manchurian Candidate. It’s beyond creepy.

      Edit: averted, not diverted.

The ‘funny’ bit is that if someone like him would be doing anything remotely similar in the period of Antonescu (against the regime) whom he praised so loudly and open, he would’ve been already executed.

In today’s ‘corrupt’ democratic Romania, he can appeal the RCC decision, go on TV, respond back, and make wild claims about coup d’etat, while hoping he will still be on the electoral list for the next time they plan the election … yeah, ‘nothing has changed’ except everything.
