Assad was a complete shitstain, we are probably going to be in a situation where the incoming government is going to worse. Expect a new refugee wave.

At least we don’t have Merkel around this time for the impending refugee crisis.
We should be funding aid stations and be directing the refugees towards Saudi.

Meanwhile Turkey singlehandedly prevented Russian takeover in Libya, kicked Russia out of Syria and blocked Black Sea giving Ukraine the breathing room.

I find it rather ironic that after winning the US (and consequently Ukraine) Russia would lose Syria.
Turkey probably decided that it’s now or never.

In favor of what exactly? Assad was an utter pishead, don’t get me wrong.. but the prospect of an (extremist) Islamic State isn’t something I would personally see as progress at all.

We don’t know what will become of the Syria yet, Islamic government could mean peace and stability or another insane passage in Syria history.
I think it will remain fragmented country or descend into civil war. Turkey doesn’t like existence of Rojava and it means they will push to absorb Rojava back into Syria, yet in new Syrian government they will have forces not aligned with Turkey.
Unknown is if Assyrians, Christians, Shia and other minorities would be able to coexist peacefully with the Sunni government.

We should push for stable governance and development even if it means working with not the most pleasant people. The idea that Syria will become some liberal democracy is naive, but it could at least be stable and not hostile.
We should also work with Turkey closely since they have major influence there. Turkey isn’t perfect either but this has done more to reduce Russia’s power than any sanctions or action Europe has taken. They also will be pushing for rebuilding so they can send the refugees they have back and we can help them with this.

No need to welcome it, or be against it, the EU should stay as far away from that mess as possible

I don’t think there is soon a new government. Too many different factions, with their soldiers ready to fight. I guess that in yhee end it will depend on who is supported by TUR.

WHY ARE WE WELCOMING THEM??
Are we really so caught up in the anti-Assad hype train that we’re just willingly ignoring the Al-Queda connections and rampant fundamentalism in a lot of these militant groups?
