I would f**king agree. One company has the lot and it’s prison food. 127g carbs in the Teriyaki chicken. Very spud heavy, and they make the school responsible for the menu being compliant and……the compliance and suitability checks are done by a run of the mill social welfare inspector. The nutritional info is also sketchy as portion sizes are off. They have to weigh my son’s for carb counting and the portion sizes vary +/- 30% from the labels.

A lot of the private companies who get these school contracts aim to get the minimum amount of nutritional value for the lowest possible price with no stipulation on balancing the meals or how those nutrients are delivered

I have to laugh, these providers are offering some seriously unhealthy shit. I suppose it’s slightly better than thousands of kids walking like zombies to the local connivence store to stuff their faces with reformed chicken in a baguette.

In fairness you also have to take into consideration whether kids will eat what’s offered. It’s all well and good presenting them with grilled vegetables or fish or something perfectly nutritionally balanced, but if it’s all going in the bin because they won’t touch it then what’s the point? Is it really so awful that a kid eats sausages and mashed potatoes or a carbonara?
What really needs addressing is the lack of physical activity kids get during school. Kids shouldn’t be at a desk for 6 hours a day.

Guys I’m starting to think that private companies shouldn’t be involved in providing public services

I’m pretty happy with the school meals options in our school. TBH I think the priority should be making sure kids get a meal they will eat in school, and anything after that is a bonus. I don’t have picky eaters but there’s no point serving up endless healthy options full of things some or most kids will throw in the bin. Donal O’Shea only ever appears to give out about the programme from what I can see.

I went to a desh school (2016-2022) so we already had ~~free~~ hot meals.
It was provided by the guy who owned the Apache pizza. Little break every single day of the week was fried chicken in white rolls with a tablespoon of mayo.
Big break was chicken curry, stew or Shepard pie, fuck you vegetarians you can eat the mash from the stew. I’m not veggie but ik people who were.
