Interfering in another country’s affairs is always a recipe for disaster. The moment you give even a slight hint of supporting one party, the opposition leader will seize the opportunity to attack your protégé and discredit them—especially when the supporting country is France, which is not particularly well-regarded there, to say the least.

The jihadists promised they would be moderate this time, so we have to throw money at them for regional security.

Syrian Christians are in a very precarious position.

There is a non-zero chance Syria could develop into an islam-guided Middle Eastern democracy such as Jordan or Lebanon and we should support them every step of the way, while also demanding they stay on that path if they want recognition.

I have no delusions about an actual western liberal government in Syria, but it could join the ranks of the few flawed democracies there are in that region which is mostly dominated by dictatorships and absolute monarchies.
