It’s legal in most countries of the world. USA is the only western country where it’s banned (in most states).

I grew up in Hungary and knew two (unrelated) kids whose parents were first cousins. I was shocked when I found out as I was under the impression that it was illegal. Apparently not.

How do you enforce this? I mean what if they don’t get married legally? The genetic issue will still be there.

I see Germany is almost fully integrated into Islam.

Why exactly does the government have to meddle in the private affairs of citizens? Who’s being harmed? Exactly! Nobody.

It’s legal in Germany, but I never met such a marriage. Other than my mother, but she was born 1937 in rural Germany, She also has a large bag full of stories about children with different handicaps from such marriages.
My mother knows a saying about this system of inbreeding.
“Heirate über den Mist, dann weißt du, was du kriegst.”
“Marry across the manure (the neighbor), then you know what you get.”
My grandmother was looked upon by the villagers, because she was from far, far away: Cologne. 70 Kilometers! Other side of the world!”

It’s one thing to continue this crap or to outright make it illegal but to actually defend it in front of other lawmakers and the world.. just shows how religion really makes anyone be idiotic

I think first cousins getting married is disgusting. I also think it’s not the job of the government to tell people who to marry, as long as it’s two consenting adults.
We have so many problems in Europe nowadays that the government should get involved in and fix, this doesn’t even scratch the top 50.

“first cousin marriage should not be stigmatised” – what.

He proposes advanced genetical screening should be available to people who want to marry their first cousins, my questions is who is gonna pay for that?
Taxpayers?
Because I’m pretty sure if anyone wanted to get screened right now it is probably available already, privately.

I’m curious. I know this is a problem essentially 100% down to the Pakistani Muslim community, but what do the rates of consanguineous marriages look like for other European countries with Muslim minority groups? I know France is 10% Muslim and most Muslims are from Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria, where they’re still fairly common.
