With friends, cooking it together and then sitting in a cozy place drinking and talking.

Generally I find that the best way to enjoy Glühwein is to drink it, and I heartily recommend this method. If you pour it over your head or into your underwear, you’ll probably find that it’s somewhat less enjoyable.

The best way is careful. One moment you are enjoying it, next you are absolutely shitfaced and unlearned your mothertongue.

Making it yourself, really. Most mulled wine bought at Christmas markets in Germany is from one of a pretty small number of manufacturers: they buy cheap table wine from Spain or Italy, throw some spices and sugar in it, and then sell it on at vastly inflated prices. You’re paying about five euros for a glass of something that costs about 40 or 50 cents *per litre* to produce. Sometimes vendors even water it down. Be skeptical if they claim it’s “bio” or “locally produced” — it *might* be, but it’s likely they’re just straight up lying to you.
It should clearly taste of wine with spices — enough to taste, not enough to overpower the flavour of the wine. It should be a little sweet, but if it tastes sugary or syrupy it definitely has way too much sugar in it.
