      **EXECUTIVE SUMMARY**

On December 25, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 aircraft crashed in western Kazakhstan, resulting in the deaths of 38 people, including the pilots. The flight originated from Baku and was headed to Grozny but was diverted twice due to adverse weather conditions—first to Makhachkala in Dagestan and later to Aktau in Kazakhstan.

Initial investigations suggested that a bird strike caused the crash. However, footage shared online by Russian blogger Fighterbomber, reportedly associated with Russia’s Aerospace Forces, proposed alternative explanations. This video showed damage to the tail section of the aircraft that resembled shrapnel marks from an anti-aircraft missile.

The aircraft’s diversion came amid heightened tensions following a Ukrainian drone strike on Grozny, which Chechen Security Council Secretary Khamzat Kadyrov confirmed. Due to recent drone activity, Dagestan’s air defence was on high alert and was unaware of the Embraer’s landing plans.

Additionally, further footage revealed more evidence of shrapnel damage, including marks on the left wing and signs of cabin depressurisation. Survivor accounts described large fragments striking the plane, and visible holes in seats indicated shrapnel penetration. Medical assistance was required for passengers who sustained injuries.

Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation, accused Russia of shooting down the aircraft with an anti-aircraft missile, holding Russian authorities responsible for failing to secure the airspace over Grozny. In the wake of the incident, Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights to Grozny and Makhachkala while investigations continue.

No doubt western leaders will profess their tragedy, concerns and say something should be done. Except for Fico and Orban, of course.

And Russia will be allowed to get away with it again.
