What’s the hat that the man in a black coat is wearing? It has some kind of thing at the top?

WWI warfare was horrendous. WWI alpine warfare was even worse.

Been recently to a remote “small” WWI cementary in South East Poland, near the boarder with Slovakia, some Russian graves, some German, few Hungarians and one Italian grave. I thought this soldier came all the way from Italy to find his demise in some remote forested hills of then norther Austro-Hungary

What is the deal with the ultra short sabre/sword with the bloke in the middle is sporting? I get that it is annoying to have the thing tangle in your legs as you skip from ledge to ledge but shortening your sword to this degree sees to negate the point of having it in the first place? Is it for show because you’re an officer and whatnot? Edit: not a basket hilt on closer inspection
