At 05.45 AM this morning, a man vandalized ornaments at the Christmas Market opened by Eskişehir’s Odunpazarı Municipality. He was then apprehended by the police for damaging public property and crimes against public peace. It was later determined that he also attacked the statues of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and İsmet İnönü, shouting “we will topple them one day” and “this is a sharia country!”.

Shortly after the interview by the Republican Attorney’s Office, he was then referred to the Criminal Court of Eskişehir with additional charges for the crimes against the Turkish Revolution.

Following public outrage, many public offices condemned the attack. The Mayor also arrived at the square and held a press briefing:

“Christmas/New Year Market (combining at one) has brought enjoyment to everyone. As always, bigot and fundamentalist forces rushed once again – we strongly condemn the attacks. We also condemn the attacks against the Founders Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and İsmet İnönü. This is a harmful, malevolent language and thus is not acceptable. Therefore, to spite them, celebrations here will take place until midnight. I invite everyone to have fun wholeheartedly”, says him.
